What an unbelievable time we all had with Tiffany Little Canfield at Boston Casting today!!

She is such an experienced casting director. And she put the "director" to work for all of us in the workshop as we performed our sides.

During each performance, she worked with each actor to get the best possible performance from her/him. She gave honest, feedback after each performance.

A dream come true for me!

I'm proud to tell anybody who asks that I am 45 years old. It's even better to add that I've NEVER been an out of work actress and started my career on "Romper Room," at the age of 5. ***Romper Room Television Show Info - Click Here***

That's right, I HAVE NEVER been an "Out of Work Actor." I actually find it insulting to be told I'm out of work, because we all WORK as actors, it's just that we are working without getting paid. How many of us are experts at auditioning? Some of you might even be able to obtain a college degree in that line of work :-).

I know that auditioning is a fact of life in our profession. People in the business scold me for telling them that I HATE auditioning. Apparently, according to these other actors, I'm not dedicated to my career if I hate any part of it. This usually comes from the mouths of actors whom have been auditioning for months without booking anything :-).

Of course I understand all about auditions. What to wear, what not to wear, how to behave, being prepared, all of that. However, I don't have a Master's Degree in auditioning, my Master's is in Performing Arts. In addition, I combined enough courses to earn a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology and a Bachelor of Arts in English Literature

I love learning, even learning about subjects which have nothing at all to do with my career. Subjects such as how to build a free-standing garden swing, which I accomplished...see?

Of course, just like any other actor or performing artist, I attend workshops, classes, and so on. My parents signed me up for private vocal lessons when I was 4 years old, and I have had a vocal coach ever since.

I participate in Community Theatre too. Why? It's a lot of time to spend without pay, right? I think of it from a completely different angle, however. First of all, I have always included my acting experience (paid or unpaid) on my resume. All casting directors want to see is the role you played (lead?) and when the show was performed. I've never been asked if they paid me for the part. So, it's a plus for your resume experience. Second, why would I take a class to sharpen my acting skills when I can get even better information for FREE? I keep my skills fresh, I'm able to see how a live audience reacts to my performances, I'm able to connect with younger actors fresh from college (or in school) who have new techniques they can show me, it's absolutely the best way to network, and, best of all, it's FUN! I would have never even considered performing on a live stage as an actress, comedian or singer if it was boring.

Now, if you happen to be a film actor, you can also perform for little to no pay. I'd recommend auditioning for college films and independent movies whenever you feel that you are auditioning all of the time. Take a break and freshen up those skills of yours! It's not a waste of time or money when you choose to take the experience as a chance to learn, network and list on your resume!

How do you KNOW you need to pause your own career as a performing artist and either attend college or, possibly, assist as a volunteer, teaching kids for the summer or for school? When you audition more often than you are landing gigs. None of us should be professionals in the field of auditioning. Auditions should never take up most of your time, so, after only landing one out of 5 bookings over these past few months, I knew I needed to sharpen my skills.

It's not an easy choice for me, for any of us. I am blessed financially, due to my GPA when I graduated from both High School and College, my husband is a Disabled-Retired Combat Veteran (the military has a few grants for spouses and dependents), plus, I qualify for several other grants too. What worries me most, and I suspect it would worry any of us in this business, is how future directors will look at my resume after 4 years off the grid, so to speak.

Therefore, I'm going to be a part of any shows put on by the college for the public or student body (on or off stage). I'll continue with Community Theatre too. As I said before, directors don't care if you were paid or not for a role, they just look at when you were in the show and what character you portrayed.

I hope something I've said here regarding education has hit home for a few of you. I realize we all need to make sure our personal lives will also support the choice to return to college as well. This just happens to be my time, I suppose. One thing I DO know is certain, if you choose to stay where you are for the remainder of your careers, attending only an occasional workshop or class, you will start to hate your job. When all you do is audition, you forget how to actually perform. When you forget how to perform, your auditioning skills go down the toilete too. Pretty soon you just give it all up, resenting all of those years you spent as a performer.

I don't want to forget about how much FUN I have performing on the stage. As recently as June 3rd, I was in a live show with my fellow Mystery Cafe cast members. Because WE were having so much fun, our audience was too! The cast and our live audience were feeding off of each-other's energy and everybody had a fantastic time. It was one of those moments when you think to yourself, "I get PAID to have this much fun. How awesome is that?"

If you have ever performed live on a stage, or have been present when your film is first screened for a live audience, you should understand my story below. I hope it helps you understand why we do what we do as well as why I'm going back to school at age 45! Trying to practice keeping my mouth shut in our drama classes...Cheers!

_________________________________________________________________

I have a friend who works at an office. She once asked me:

You see, we are both paid to do our job, we both needed to interview and sometimes come back for a second interview to get our jobs too.

I chose my career because there is a bonus given out to me at the end of every single work day.

THAT is why I do what I do. It's why I choose to work in a field where income fluctuates so much. Life is too short for us to waste most of our time working at some job for money and financial reasons alone.
A SOLDIER’S PLAY (@ Roxbury Repertory Theater through Nov. 2nd) is an eloquent whodunit of the first order which takes place in a segregated army unit in the South during WWII.

Charles Fuller’s A SOLDIER’S PLAY, although it was written some 30 years ago, seems just as relevant today for its themes of discrimination and corruption in the military. Fuller sets the play before true integration in the armed services so you have African-American troops under white leadership when the story begins. As we know, racism is still pervasive today …and now you can add sexism to the –isms which haunt the military. What makes Fuller’s play unique is how racism is turned inward to feed on the soul.

Director Marshall Hughes gets rewarding resonance from casting a female in one of the soldier’s roles. She plays it as written (after all, women in the army today are just “soldiers”) and you immediately go along, the ensemble is so strong and the story so compelling. Television and stage veteran Daver Morrison leads the cast as the army lawyer assigned to investigate the murder. Morrison gives a powerful performance as the cool captain who never loses his head, even when white superior officers try to have him dismissed from the case for being Black.

If you’ve seen the play before, you haven’t seen it like this. Hughes employs ingenious shadow play (on stage and on the side walls of the theater) to ratchet up the suspense and amplify the brutality in the piece, making it much more visceral.

See it for a fresh look at an important play and see it for the crackerjack performances: From Damon Singletary’s hateful, yet pitiful sergeant to David J. Curtis’ gentle, tragic blues strummer. From Geraldo Portillo’s seething dissenter to Bruce Drexel Smith’s toadying right hand man. From Ezra Stevens’ defensive corporal to Emerald Johnson’s earnest private. Everyone in the company contributes to this remarkable production.

Today was the day where I became witness to the utter destruction of a High School Performing Arts program. Most of you should realize the seriousness of how the arts are slowly dying and nobody knows why it matters. Well, it matters because of many reasons, the main one, I feel, would be taking away a fun humanities related subject from the students whom may only be able to excersize their right brains through the arts so that they can succeed in their other academic classes in humaities. Test scores go down. Then the school funding is cut due to low scores. It could even lead to closing the entire school. The arts are really this important, and I am so upset that a school which has a reputation for being top notch can't even see this sad situation. The students are the ones who will suffer most.

First off, I was informed today that my own performing arts class, Standup Comedy, which I was teaching at the Southeastern Regional Vocational Tech High School in Easton, MA, wasn't being renewed for the upcoming spring semester due to the loud classroom (it's standup comedy, we laugh, that was never a secret when we started) and other petty problems which sound to me just like jealous faculty members trying to get rid of the teacher whom has actually performed professionally since the age of 3. I didn't learn what I know from some silly book or class, and that makes some people intimidated. Frankly, I am more upset that the course is being nixed than the fact they won't ask me to teach it. The school needs that course, and here's why I feel that way...

See, this class was the only performing arts course any of the popular kids would join. So, now, the school has just made the mistake of discouraging students of a more popular social status from enjoying the performing arts. This move, if it's not replaced by an equally interesting course for the students right away, will kill the performing arts department quickly.

Why? Well, it's simple. The major for performing arts at the school is brand new. This means that the first students attracted to the courses will be of a less popular group of students and labeled by all other kids as being only for the nerds. Soon, even those involved in the program will drop out to avoid ridicule. Then, poof, no more performing arts studies at the high school.

Like it or not, social standing plays a huge hand in this process. If students are not offered a variety of "cool" or interesting classes, appealing to the kids at school with more popular social status', then nobody in that social circle will consider the stage as somewhere interesting, fun, or even cool. The school systems across the country are experiencing declines in the student populations because they are neglecting the performing arts programs in favor of sports.

You see, without courses like my standup comedy class (which was very popular and many kids are now very angry that the school cut this program), we will never be able to blend students of all social levels successfully. The school here in Easton, MA is heading for a performing arts group made of only a few kids, which will then be cut for financial reasons. Teachers in the subject will loose jobs, and our schools will once again be completely declining in both academic testing and even in population of the schools themselves. Who wants a boring school? Dropping out of high school will definitely increase without some sort of program which appeals to most of the kids, and not all kids enjoy playing sports. We will be faced with an epidemic which nobody will know how to fix when it's too late.

The arts excersize the right brain and enhance creativity. Performing arts need to be saved especially because of the huge amount of benefits they offer students. These include alternatives to sports for kids who don't play (keeping kids off the streets), helping students excel in humanities related subjects such as History, English and Social Studies. Also, many activities on stage can help with weight loss because of physical excersizes used by singers, actors, and dancers alike.

I personally went to 3 different high schools due to my father's job. The first was in Quincy, IL, not a big city in any way. However, the performing arts department was so large and advanced that students of every social level in the school were involved. The senior class president sang, danced and was an actor. He is now a film director. Other popular students wrote comedies, performed stand up routines, danced, joined swing or show choirs to sing and dance, the list is very long.

Oh, and the kids whom were not quite as popular were just as involved. Nobody was ever immune to the arts at our high school. Our stage was the size of one on Broadway in NYC with 2 side wings for extra stage room. We also had a very expensive backdrop fly, which lifted the backdrops up straight and didn't roll them up. The money for all of this came from ticket sales and packed audiences. Our standards were very high for every single show, so they never appeared to be amateur productions.

You see, by making our performing arts department more diverse, everyone was a winner. Students had a great time doing whatever they enjoyed most. The school department made huge profits from ticket sales and donations to the programs as well. Test scores were very high, giving the school even more money from the state. It was simply a haven for the artistic side of our town.

Then my family moved to a large city. I expected the same kinds of programs there, however, was met with pathetic stages no bigger than the stage wings from my small hometown. Almost no performing arts program either. Plus, anybody involved with the performing arts for this high school were considered as outcasts. All, except for maybe our speech team, which I joined. We then moved to another part of the city, the program there was better, but not great. With my wild ideas being taken seriously by our department, like more shows, more interesting plays for those who liked horror stories, a strong speech team that would be eligible for the ATHELETE OF THE MONTH AND YEAR AWARD. That was fought against in a big way, but we won and became an official athletic team! I became the first on our team to win the title of Athlete of the Month and they continue to award students with a competitive nature involved in the DDF team with the honor which I started back in the late 80's. The sports teams didn't like what I started, but soon it became accepted throughout the school.

Now, I know that they are still adding new performing arts programs there and students whom would never normally associate with one another are now working as teams to be the very best in the state. See, the arts work wonders and schools are pissing them away!

All our little tech school in Easton now offers is drama class. 2 shows a year. The female teacher there is not well liked by any student there either. Every single student I know from my own course has told me they won't ever become a part of that group because of their geek/nerd status at school. At least with the standup comedy class, where not one of my students had stage experience, the cool kids began to see the fun performing can offer them. They have just scratched the bare surface, but now it's gone so my students are very angry, not having an outlet for this new interest anymore.

To quote the funniest, as well as the most popular student at Southeastern, whom happened to also be in my class last fall...:

"Southeastern doesn't have a sense of humor, that's why they got rid of standup. An example of their thought process:

Student Says: 'finally an extended day class where I can enjoy & have fun & laugh in, I'm having a good time'

Southeastern: 'You're having fun? And laughing and having a good time???? well that's not good. We're gunna have to change that now aren't we?? No more stand up.'

we'll miss you, I know I will"

The above student comment is only one voice, I know after my daughter gets the word out tomorrow there will be similar quotes and complaints, but the school does not care at all. They will kill our performing arts department before it has a chance. I've also seen their version of a speech team, and they are terrible. I know not everyone is a star, but the coaching and dramatic instructions are seriously lacking and incorrect (I watched a few classes being taught and it made me sick), which will set Southeastern Performing Arts on the chopping block much sooner. I even offered to volunteer to assist their speech coach since I have over 37 first place awards under my belt, as well as being a judge while in college. Nope, I'm an outsider trying to rock the boat is all they see.

My friends, why on earth do we allow schools to butcher our performing arts departments and beef up the sports, even if the school isn't really good at sports? We have to do something as a society to save our schools from lacking culture, social maturity, and teaching our kids that if they don't play a sport, then they have no other after school enjoyment other than making trouble.

I don't think anything short of a student petition will save my program now, but I'm much more concerned about the big picture here. Making being on a stage or working behind the scenes awesome for everyone, like it was in my small hometown high school.

Thanks for reading this, I'm very concerned about all of us loosing the arts in our school systems due to pure stupidity and short sightedness...Renee

first time, I was happy.

I had already seen the film, from a dvd I received from the director Justin Fielding about 101 times.

I guess you can say we were all happy, the whole cast and crew.

I mean, you have to say I am lucky, how many people that are actors, can actually play omage, to their idols, in my case Jackie Chan.

Now I am not just, talk about walking in the background, and for the first time...I could see that I could really act.

I made people laugh so had, everytime I was on the screen, you could hardly hear anything else in the theatre.

I am told, I can make people laugh alot, but when if I don't watch myself, how do I know how truly funny I was?

Now on this site, in respect, I can't really explain exactly what I had said in the film, but it made people laugh,

and to know I can do this, at playing crazy characters, and going on for minutes at a time...making people laugh,

actually feels pretty good.

Then to see that I actually can really act, is a good feeling too.

But it is also a really great feeling to take something that has meant so much to me and add it

into my character..."Jackie (Chan) Maria", swinging nun-chucks also.

I guess it was good to come back to Boston for one nite.

Oh did I mention, yes I did move to Maine and I have truly been training twice a week for a year before work

in Tai Chi, with my teacher Ahura Z.

Who says, dreams, can't come true...
I got in touch with my idol Jackie Chan, well he actually got in touch with me.tag:neactor.com,2011-04-22:2144347:BlogPost:833412011-04-22T17:39:30.000ZShelly "Nun-Chucks"https://neactor.com/profile/ShellyNunChucks

If you have a dream, I just say go for it.

Yes, mine, possibly different than most.

I am not going to say how it actually happened, maybe someday, but after 5 years everyday, writing everywhere,

sometimes up to midnite, it finally happened.

But it was the other way around, Jackie friended me, inwhich, I truly thought it was a hoax, but long story short, all I'm going to say, Jackie, well I don't consider him, my idol, I consider a friend…

I realize, that each step of the way of my dream is well worth...I do train in a martial art, and I am going to write in a second interview....just had a first film showing of Inventory.....yes I got to play omage to Jackie.

If you want to know, yes a dream is hard work, but please if you have a dream, please keep going, cause I'm living proof, even if it is just to work with your idol, just go for it.
Stephen Stapinski booked a photo shoot for Zoll Medical Devicestag:neactor.com,2011-04-16:2144347:BlogPost:824772011-04-16T15:00:00.000ZStephen Stapinskihttps://neactor.com/profile/StephenStapinski

Am (relatively) settled in Brooklyn. Nothing quite like moving from a four bedroom house to a New York apartment, but it's worth it. The opportunity to move to NYC presented itself so here I am. However, it doesn't feel much different than Boston as far as the acting thing. This profession is a business and must be approached as such. Now then, in which unpacked box is my business plan....?

Won't say too much detail, but what I am allowed to talk about is that this is a slacker film, and has lots of laughs.

Justin Fielding really wrote into the script, my character, Maria/Jackie(Chan) and had me saying through the film, "My name is not Maria, it's Jackie, just like my idol, the man I want to work with".

Justin also wrote me in as a strong woman, lifting tables and chairs, climbing up on ladders and swinging my nun-chucks.

What he did…

What he did also do, was let everybody develop their characters and had everybody meet up and he actually wrote the script right on the spot with us there, and I think that got us to develop our characters on a better basis's.

Everybody was really great and this film, where I think I had more lines than previous things I did.

Hopefully it will be done editing soon and to be shown probably in the Boston area.
This Wednesday film premiere of Underground, honored to have little part.tag:neactor.com,2010-04-18:2144347:BlogPost:439582010-04-18T14:16:31.000ZShelly "Nun-Chucks"https://neactor.com/profile/ShellyNunChucks
The Boston International Film Festival is in full swing this week and I am so honored
2 be a part of one of the few films, selected for the BIFF.

The film is called Underground, created, written, lead role, and did his own fights and stunts,
Will Bertraud.

The thing about this film, yes, Will ia a very talented African American male,
And when he casted his film, he did go on looks.

I f you had some fight experience, you fit the bill, and these are the type of

I f you had some fight experience, you fit the bill, and these are the type of
Films I want to get into more and more.

When I auditioned for Will, he did like the fact that I had a little bit of training
In a martial art called Capoeira, so with Will there was some connection, 4 me
With this film.

Yes even the extras in the scene I was in, some had fight experience.

Can you imagine the sheer authencity of a film, where you even get your
Extra's in scenes that love these films, can imagine the energy the day of filming.

Yes my energy was very high, on set, and the scene was set on a lake on a warm summer
Day, it was beautiful.

I got a chance 2 experience for the first time, real raw talent in the making.

I got so much into the part, I screamed and improved at a certain part,
"What the Beep?" They liked it so much, they asked me to keep doing it over
And over again.

I do have a picture I can post tomorrow, from that scene and yes anyone that
Sees the picture, my face is so horrific looking, you will laugh.

I have great facial expressions, that's the one thing I do have have and people
Seem to like that, even no matter how nasty, ugly, I can look, for a part,
I'll do, cause I don't need be the pretty girl.

I really had a lot of fun, and yes I don't have to a leading star in a film, you get me
Like Will did in his film and one scene, and you'll love me.

I was so happy to do this one scene, yes I'm an extra, but for giving 100 percent
In a type of film, that gets my blood pumping and adrenline going, it seems
To get everyone around me excited and it adds, and I think people enjoyed that day.

I am looking forward to Wednesday, it is going to take me 3 hours to get back to
Boston.

Yes I am only an extra in this film and you might think I'm nuts to go 3 hours
Just 2 c a film that I'm only an extra n take 3 hours to come back home.

Well these r the films I live for, and I am hnored to truly be part of this film.

And yes I am proud to say the lead is African American and I got to be part
Of this film.

If there are more film makers out there, I want you to know, I don't have to
Be a star of a film, if there is a good role for me, that I can do, I will give
You 100 percent of myself, just like I did for Underground.
