..from the MAINE HERALD GAZETTE, this is part of a two-issue article about THE NIGHTINGALE SINGS, and indie short I filmed in Camden ME in August...

ROCKPORT — Fifteen-year-old Camden-area resident
Devin Fletcher was captivated by the opportunity to play the
lead role in a four-actor film by Maine Media Workshops
graduate, Director David Scott.
“I was immediately entranced by the storyline and a chance
to work with such a phenomenal crew,” said Fletcher, herself
a Workshops student, in an interview about the August shoot
of Scott’s short film, “The Nightingales Sing.” The film is an
adaptation of a short story of the same name by Elizabeth Parsons,
who first published it in a 1946 New Yorker.
“Director David Scott saw a scene I did as a young actor
at the Maine Media Workshops and asked me to read for the
role [of Joanna],” she said. “I was immediately entranced by
the storyline and the chance to work with such a phenomenal
crew.”
Although most of the film crew consisted of graduates
from or instructors at the Workshops, two of the four actors
are not graduates. They are Kachina Dechert, a Brit living in
Boston, and Jim Powers, a businessman from Rowley, Mass.
Dechert comes from a stage family, as does Fletcher. Powers
has gotten acting roles since he met a colleague of actor
Matthew McConaughey in a Boston bar and he continues to
seek roles without “giving up my day job.”
The fourth actor was Director Scott, who could not find
the right actor to play the part he took on. Scott had some acting
experience and he knew this part in his soul.
Dechert lives in Boston, but spent earlier years in London
with her mother and in Canada with her father. Her mother is
a percussionist who has played for Elton John, The Who, Tom
Jones and Dido. Her dad played keyboards for Bad Company,
David Gilmore and others.
“I was born in London, England,” Dechert said. “I spent
my time traveling around the world with bands from the time
I was two weeks old, alongside my mum. I loved being around
musicians, gigs and instruments and seeing different places
and cultures.”
Away from the pigs
“After finishing high school, I decided I needed a change
from the cows and pigs [living with her father in rural Canada]and I moved to Boston,” she
said. “I took a job with a small
construction company doing
all sorts of things that ranged
from woodwork and painting
to building stone walls, driving
excavators and landscaping.”
Dechert gravitated to acting
because “watching my parents
go out there and entertain
their fans with such incredible
energy and love got me really
excited!” She studied acting in
Boston and New York, traveling
back and forth for classes
and acting gigs.
Powers, meanwhile, has
been looking more familiar to
residents of the Rowley-Ipswich
area.
“I got into the acting business
purely by chance,” Powers
said. “I met one of Matthew
McConaughey’s assistants at
an Ipswich bar. I was on set
the next week as a background
extra and soon landed feature
roles on many of the films and
cable shows in the area.”
Meanwhile, Fletcher lives
in Warren and spends much of
her time between Belfast and
Rockland as a sophomore at
Watershed School. She has a
passion for literature, dance,
Athens pizza and fencing. She
recently competed in the Summer
National Championships of
fencing and she loves to wear
vintage clothing.
Fletcher had a stressful yet
gratifying moment during the
filming, which went five consecutive
days from 5 p.m. to 5
a.m.
“It happened at the same
time,” she said. “David announced
that he thought I
would get the next shot in a single
take. Everyone was so exhausted
that I was determined
to prove him right and I succeeded,
even though I was terrified
of going cross-eyed from
the tightness of the closeup.”
Fletcher’s parents worked
in theater when she was much
younger.
“So I’ve been acting since I
was quite small,” she said".....
